wake up call
this morning i had my first earthquake in my apartment. i have a tremendous fear of earthquakes and therefore hate them. i was still in bed and tried SO hard to just wait it out. but it always goes through your mind - maybe this is the beginning of the big one, and if so, get somewhere safe! i'm not really sure where that somewhere safe is in my little place, but i suppose out from in front of the bookcase is a good start. i just really hate to be alone...anyone want to move in with me?

well, just like most socal-ers (well, those who are freaked by earthquakes anyway), i turned to my television for wisdom. of course tim russert and judy woodruff were no help, but soon the local news interrupted them to say it was a 5.6 quake. (for those that don't know, that's sizable, enough to wake you from sunday morning sleeping in!) the news report is always like this: 1. "for those of you just joining us, we did have a moderate earthquake felt through most parts across the southland", 2. they show 1 shot repeatedly, usually something a security camera catches, or in this case, a repeated glimpse of the ricter scale in the newsroom. 3. they take calls from weird people in random places who have nothing more to say then "yup, it was shaking", 4. then finally someone from caltech comes on to calm the peace. a southern california native gets to know this person well (when i was growing up she was a woman named kate). after you hear from caltech, you can turn off the tv and go about your life until the evening news at which time they've adjusted the magnitude.

you may notice such fine news reporting in your area as well, but for a different cause. for example, you can apply a similar formula to a snow storm - begin with the weather report, cut to the same repeating shot of people evacuating (or sometimes shots of how bad the snow was on a previous storm) - always with cars sliding into each other, and interview people in the grocery store resolving them of their supply of bread, milk and toilet paper.
