santa ana
last night was a typical fall night in los angeles. the santa anas blew the hot wind in from the desert and the night was so clear you could almost touch the stars. the air smelled like forest fire and in the west you could see the coral colored smoke from the fires burning in the hills. these are the smells of fall that i grew up with, unique to los angeles.

i have new friend in my building who moved in last week. she is from chicago and asked if it is normal to be this hot. my first thought was, "at least it's not smolderingly humid", but i decided to just affirm her notion. "oh yes, this is normal. this is fall in los angeles. it lasts only a few days, but those days are like nothing else you will experience." this is the beautiful mix of urban desert, signifying the change of season.

git 'er dun
i still haven't found a church. i'm sure there are good ones out there, but none have interested me. so in feeling a need for some church yesterday, i decided to check out one in michigan. and how cool is it that we live in an age where i can get my church for a pastor who lives 2000 miles away.

logically, i decided to listen to the most recent sermon, which was part of a series, so i opted to start with the first in a series. man did i stumble across something - it seems that rob is pissing quite a few people off. or rather, rob has become the pinata for everyone who is taking hits on the emergent church movement.

for those of you who do not go to jacob's well, i shall explain the concept. and after i start my first seminary class on wednesday on popular culture, theology and the emergent church (as taught by this guy), i shall know even more. the emergent church is a movement among young adults to find themselves in the church today. it is applied postmodernity, and it is controversial for its questioning of church tradition. somewhat ironically, it also embraces many of the traditional church ideas of community and critical thinking that protestantism (and many other religions) was founded on. let me also explain what it is not - a denomination. there is not one formula, although as i mentioned above, the traditional limitations of distance and communication are no longer applicable so ideas are shared much more freely.

check out rob's press for yourself, then google "rob bell" and "mars hill" to read a few of the ranting blogs. i personally have a hard time believing the rants, since this is the man who inspired my faith through three things: his wife, his love of an outsider kid, and his exegesis of green day. quite simply, God has given the man the gift of explaining how He transcends culture. but these disagreements are conversations i look forward to participating in. in the meantime, i will be holed up in class but i promise i will breathe every now and then to say hi to you all.

tired
how do you define "college try"? as in, "let's give it the old college try"?

i am not a quitter, especially in relationships. but i also want to learn when to stop expending effort on one thing, when my efforts can be much better spend towards another. i suppose that is the art of life though, creatively pouring yourself into different people and things, trying out different combinations of you. sometimes they work, sometimes they fail, sometimes they end, and sometimes they lead to something even better.

to be young
last week i went to a new doctor for a check up (everything's fine). the doctor had a medical student take my vitals. i thought i'd share a direct quote from her with you:

"hmm...you don't seem to have a heartbeat" (after trying three places on my body) "i mean, it's there, it's just very faint".

it's not ok
i guess i am in a bit of a sober mood lately - which makes me not want to comment on much in life even though i want to say a lot. i guess i'm afraid that you all will judge me. people tend to freak out when i get serious...but i can't be the life of the party all the time. or worse yet, i'll be boring to you.

here you go, here is my sobriety, but please do not mistake it for depression.

i finished reading a long way down, hornby's latest book. it was one of the most interesting novels i have read in a while. it starts with four people meeting to kill themselves - how's that for a start? what follows is a compelling and realistic dialogue on life, told with a unique perspective of those who are ready to lose it.

i have also been starkly drawn to the television show starved. i doubt it is anything that you would have even heard about or even be interested in watching. but it is so raw you can touch it. having said that, be warned that i call the show raw for the honest way it displays addiction, and the sick human way of dealing with it.

the rest of life is, as i wrote before, just here.
